HOW WE BEGAN…
Smile Squared® is a St. Louis-based, social enterprise founded by Eric and Geri Cope. After adopting their oldest child from Guatemala years earlier, the Copes were volunteering at a dental clinic in Guatemala City, when they were struck by the large number of children with untreated cavities and horribly diseased mouths. They learned how the children’s dental problems were affecting their overall health and well-being. And, sadly, they realized the children’s dental problems were largely preventable. The children simply didn’t have access to basic necessities like toothbrushes. They later realized the problem was not restricted to developing countries, but also was a problematic issue affecting children in poverty throughout the United States – in epidemic proportions.
Feeling compelled to do something about it, the Copes decided to be a part of the solution. In 2011 they started Smile Squared with the simple idea that when someone purchased a Smile Squared® toothbrush, they would donate one to a child in need. The company uses giving to improve the health and wellbeing of children around the world.
OUR NEXT CHAPTER…
Inspired by the teaching moments, adventures and experiences of traveling with our children throughout the years – we introduced a line of travel organizers and journals in 2016. Giving is still our core value, and we’re excited that 10% of the net profits generated from sales of these travel products will help fund wish trips for children facing life threatening medical conditions. We hope that when you use Zach’s Bags™ and our Travel Journals – you travel with a smile, knowing the positive impact you’re making with each purchase. After all, every day is an adventure and a gift. Why not share it? That’s the true exponential value of a smile.
Smile Squared® has been featured on The Today Show, O, The Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart’s Whole Living, Dr. Oz – The Good Life, BuzzFeed, Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, Apartment Therapy and The Costco Connection. In 2012, Smile Squared® was named “Indie Merchant of the Year” by Entrepreneur Magazine’s entrepreneur.com.
