There is finally a way to shop and feel good about it afterwards. The Buy One, Give One programs, also known as One for One programs, work by donating the product that you purchase to someone in need. Most of us don’t give purchases like soap and toothbrushes a second thought, but what if these small purchases could help someone else? Making the decision to consciously purchase a product through a company that will help give back to someone in need is a simple way for us all to give back.

Because dental care is an important part of preventing chronic diseases and keeping a healthy smile, Smile Squared is aiming to give away one million toothbrushes by 2015 – and they’re not stopping there. Since over 50 million pounds of toothbrushes are tossed in the trash each year in the US alone, rather than adding to the waste, the company is trying to offset mainstream toothbrush trash by making their toothbrushes out of biodegradable, compostable, BPA-free bamboo.”

Companies help the needy worldwide through ‘buy one, give one’ programs.

Want to support a worthy cause in a cool way? Check out these 10 “buy one, give one” companies. Every purchase you make means a similar item will be given to someone in need — providing baby clothing, blankets, glasses, shoes or food to others here in America and around the world.

TOMS

What they sell: Comfy and casual shoes for men, women and kids, though women can also find dressier ballet flats and wedges as well. TOMS also recently launched its online sunglasses boutique.

Buy one, give one: With its “One for One” program, TOMS pioneered this idea and inspired others to do the same. Buy a pair of shoes, and TOMS will donate a pair to a child in need. And for every pair of glasses purchased, a person will receive the eye care he or she needs, whether it’s medical treatment, prescription glasses or sight-saving surgery.

Warby Parker

What they sell: Warby Parker offers stylish and affordable prescription eyeglasses online. Affordable as in $95 with lenses included. If you want to try the glasses before you buy them, you can upload your photo to the site and model an array of slick looks virtually. Or Warby Parker will ship you up to five free frames, so you can try them on at home before you place your order.

Buy one, give one: A For every pair of glasses purchased, Warby Parker gives glasses or funding to its nonprofit partners to help people get their vision back. To date, the company has distributed more than 85,000 pairs of glasses and counting.

The Company Store

What they sell: High-quality bedding like sheets, duvets and pillows.

Buy one, give one: For each comforter ($24-$729) you buy, The Company Store will donate one to a homeless child here in America.

One World Futbol

What they sell: Simple, ultra-durable, all-terrain soccer/multi-sport balls that don’t need a pump and won’t go flat — even if punctured. One World Futbol is inspired by Tim Jahnigen’s world travels in which he saw poor children playing soccer in the streets. These kids used whatever they could find to construct a ball because they couldn’t afford to buy one or theirs couldn’t handle the wear and tear of the harsh terrain. Jahnigen now focuses on building balls that can hold up to intense play, and he then gets them distributed.

Buy one, give one: You buy a ball ($39.50), and Jahnigen sends another to a community in need via organizations working in refugee camps, war zones, inner cities or poverty-stricken communities. If you’d like, One World Futbol allows you to choose the organization that receives the ball. The musician Sting helped fund the cause and named it the One World Futbol Project after his famous song, One World (Not Three).

FIGS

What they sell: Elegant bow ties, neckties and cashmere scarves for men.

Buy one, give one: Via the Threads for Threads program, for every tie ($55-$95) or scarf ($145-$225) sold, FIGS gives a school uniform to a child in need of an education. FIGS says that throughout the developing world, not only are uniforms often a requirement, but wearing one is a source of immense pride for a child, their family and the entire village.

Out of Print Clothing

What you’ll find: Men’s, women’s and kids’ accessories, notebooks and cool shirts featuring iconic and often out-of-print book covers like Harold and the Purple Crayon, Brave New World and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Buy one, give one: For each product sold, one book is donated to a community in need through Out of Print’s partner, Books For Africa.

Two Degrees Food

What they sell: All-natural, gluten-free, vegan, low-sodium and GMO-free bars in flavors like chocolate banana (nut-free option), apple pecan and cherry almond.

Buy one, give one: For every Two Degrees bar you buy, the company donates a meal to a hungry child. Or for 99 cents, you can purchase a virtual bar for a Facebook friend, and Two Degrees will match that with an actual meal for a child. The company has provided food for children in developing countries, including Haiti, Kenya, Malawi and Somalia.

Baby Teresa

What they sell: Soft and sweet 100 percent organic cotton baby clothing and accessories.

Buy one, give one: For each outfit it sells, Baby Teresa (named in honor of Mother Teresa) will donate an outfit to a child in need. For each accessory you buy, the company will give a portion of the sales to purchase formula for babies in need.

Buy one, give one: This charity distributes environmentally friendly, rechargeable lights around the world, replacing dangerous and polluting kerosene lamps. Through its online shop, you can purchase a light for yourself and have another one donated ($30 total).
